Davenport was not the first person to build the first working DC motor. Many developments had already taken place across Europe when Davenport filed the patent. Moritz Jacobi, in 1834 presented a potent, active engine, while Sibrandus Stratingh and his counterpart Becker were the first to demonstrate the actual application of a working motor.
