In mathematics, the place value can be defined as the value of a particular digit depending upon its position. The order which is written from the right-hand side to the left-hand side is given as units or one’s, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousand, lakh, ten lakh, and so on. A given number may have similar digits but their place values may be different. The place value chart is a type of chart which helps to place or align the values in the correct position. The place value chart has been divided into two types: the Indian and the American Place value chart. Let us take an example:
-
Write the Place value of the number 345?
The correct position or place value of the given number is given as:
3 = 300 or hundreds.
4 = 40 or tens .
5 = 5 * 1 or ones.
In this article, we may cover some interesting topics such as the number systems, types of the number systems, the Indian and American place value chart, and do a detailed discussion about it.
What is the Number System?
Any mathematical value which is used to find or calculate the objects or arithmetic operations like subtraction, addition, and multiplication, can be defined as the number system. Do you know that there are various categories of numbers such as rational and irrational numbers, integers, natural and real numbers, and so on? Likewise, the number system is also classified into four types on the basis of the properties: binary system, hexadecimal number system, the octal system of numbers, and the decimal system. Numbers such as 0 and 1 are most commonly used in these types of number systems along with numbers between 0 to 9. We shall discuss the types of number systems in the next section.
Types of Number System
As mentioned above, a set of values or the system of numeration which is used to represent a number is known as the number system. It has been widely classified into
Four types. The following are the types of number system:
- A type of number system which uses the digits 0 and 1 can be defined as the binary number system. These numbers i.e. 0 and 1 are known as bits and 8-bit respectively. All together, they are known as bytes. It does not include numbers like 2, 4, 6, 5 and so on. The binary number system is generally seen in computers for coding and various other activities.
- A type of number system that deals with numbers between 0 to 7 can be defined as the octal number system. It has the base of the number 8. The octal system is very similar to that of the binary system but it deals with numbers such as: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …7. It is also seen in the minicomputers to compute various data.
- The number system which is used in real-life scenarios can be defined as the decimal number system. It deals with the numbers between 0 to 9. Thus, it has the base of a number 10. The conversion of binary numbers to decimal numbers is very common in mathematics or A.I. You must remember that, if a number system does not contain any base, the base automatically is written as 10.
- A number system that includes a total of 16 digits can be defined as the hexadecimal number system. Here, the term ‘digits’ also signifies the alphabets. Such as: 0 to 9 and A to F. The alphabets A to F signify the numbers between 10 to 15. It is generally used to reduce the large string of binary numbers into a small system of numbers.
